At Templer Way Campers, we believe insulation is the foundation of any quality campervan conversion. Whether you’re exploring the Scottish Highlands in the depths of winter or enjoying a sea breeze in Devon mid-summer, your van needs to be ready for it all. If you’re wondering how a van needs to be insulated, we’ve covered the overall process with bits of advice to help you understand it all a bit easier.
Why Insulation Matters In The UK Climate
The British climate demands more than a surface-level solution. Cold, damp winters and unpredictable seasonal shifts mean your van should be capable of managing internal temperature, condensation, and noise throughout the year. An effective insulation installation should:
- Keep warmth in during winter
- Reduce condensation and internal moisture
- Block out road and weather noise
- Create a stable environment for further systems like heating and electrics
The 3-Stage Insulation System
Most insulation packages in the UK should include a comprehensive process designed specifically for British travel conditions. At Templer Way Campers, we use high-quality branded products such as Dodo Mat Silent Coat, Thermo Liner, and Fleece Layering, each chosen for its performance in reducing sound and retaining heat.
Dodo Mat Silent Coat
This is the first layer applied directly to the metal panels. It works to deaden vibration and drastically reduce road noise inside the cabin. By covering key sections of the van’s bodywork, we create a more peaceful driving and living experience.
Thermo Liner
Over the Silent Coat layer, we apply Thermo Liner, a high-performance foil-lined foam insulation. It offers both sound absorption and thermal resistance, helping to reflect heat back into the van while blocking cold from the outside. It’s a crucial step in retaining heat during winter months and maintaining efficiency when using heating systems.
Fleece Insulation Layer
To finish the insulation build-up, we add a fleece insulation layer. This adds bulk, fills out any remaining air gaps, and works in tandem with the previous layers to increase thermal mass and noise absorption. It creates a well-insulated shell, ready for interior fit-out.

Professional Ply Lining & Carpet Finish
It’s best to line the steelwork and panels on a campervan separately. This allows for easier access during future upgrades, which means no need to rip out walls just to install new electrics or insulation later. At Templer Way Campers, every lining job includes new CNC-cut ply panels fitted to the sides of the van, and existing roof linings are retained or upgraded depending on your preference.
We finish all walls with high-quality stretch carpet lining, providing a soft, warm, and durable finish that improves both comfort and acoustics. The result is a professional, modern interior with a cohesive finish.

Safety & Compliance For Your Campervan
All our materials meet UK fire safety standards and are installed to prevent moisture traps and airflow issues. We take care to insulate around structural ribs, wheel arches, cab roofs, and rear doors, the often-overlooked zones where heat loss is most common. Whether it’s a compact VW Transporter or a long-wheelbase Sprinter, every inch of the van is insulated with both function and safety in mind.
Customising Insulation For Every Van
No two vans are exactly alike. That’s why we adapt our methods and materials depending on the shape, size, and intended use of the vehicle. We’ve worked on everything from compact weekenders to full-time off-grid conversions. Whether it’s the flat panels of a Transit Custom or the curved ceiling of a Peugeot Boxer, we select the right materials for each section and install them with attention to every detail.
Built For All-Season Travel
Our goal is to create vans that perform all year round, warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and resilient to the constant change of British weather. With proper insulation, there’s no need to limit adventures to the warmer months. A well-insulated campervan also sets the foundation for further systems like diesel heaters, off-grid electrics, or built-in ventilation, all of which rely on a well-controlled interior environment.
